Where the name ''GAGALI'' comes from?
This ship, which was originally called martiko, was later also called GAGALI because of the beak-shaped end of the bowsprit. The sailboat is a medium-sized (19-30 meters) commercial boat. The word martiko has passed into Turkish from the Italian terms marticana, martingana. It was frequently used in the Ottoman period, especially in Istanbul in the 1800s. Although it was mostly used for timber transportation, cargoes such as coal, iron and salt were also transported. She has three jibs, a bollard tackle, two masts and a sail rig with cabasorta rigging.
